Good nutrition is vital to a child's growth, development and well-being. Research
studies tell us that students are able to concentrate better and learn more effectively
when they are well-nourished. According to the Dietitians of Canada, roughly one-third
of a child's daily food intake occurs during school hours. When children arrive at school
hungry or are exposed to unhealthy food choices, they are less ready and able to learn
and are at risk of developing chronic illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes, later
in life. (source: Government of Canada website).
Making sure your child is eating properly is really important. Good nutrition is critical
to a child's: physical and emotional growth, health & ability to learn. Students do better
and behave better in school when they eat properly. (source: Government of Ontario
Website).
Only 50% of Canadian children and adolescents are getting a minimum number of
servings per day of Vegetables and Fruit (excluding French fries). Only a quarter (25%)
are meeting the new Canada’s Food Guide (2007) recommendations for Grain Products
consumption. (Source: 2007 Report card on nutrition for school children, Breakfast for
